Nuru: Orkisima’s First University Graduate

In May 2026, Nuru Lazaro graduated from the University of Arusha with a degree in Primary Education, becoming the first person from the Orkisima community to earn a university degree.
Nuru has been sponsored by Wild Spirit Foundation since she was 16 years old. Her name means “Light” or “Hope” in Swahili, and today it has never been more fitting. After excelling in secondary school, she was able to attend university through scholarships provided by the foundation. She has now graduated with a teaching degree that will allow her to educate future generations in her own community.
Nuru has already been offered a full-time teaching position within Tanzania’s public education system. Her dream is to return to Orkisima and become a role model for the girls growing up in her village.
Her achievement is also a milestone for the entire Orkisima community. This is where its first generation of university graduates begins.
