They remember ancient routes, dry-season water sources, and the crop fields that bear fruit when food becomes scarce. This extraordinary memory makes them one of Earth’s most remarkable species — but today, it also leads them through villages and into farmland, where a single herd can destroy an entire harvest in one night.

They are not acting out of aggression. They are searching for food and water in landscapes transformed by human expansion.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Africa was home to several million elephants. Today, around 415,000 remain — a decline of more than 80%.
Tanzania holds one of Africa’s most important elephant populations. After losing more than 60% of its elephants between 2009 and 2014, the country has seen signs of recovery, with more than 60,000 elephants estimated today.
But as habitat shrinks and human activity expands, human–elephant conflict continues to rise, putting people, crops, and elephants at risk.

Elephants remember.

What We Do

Through Kazi ya Tembo, Wild Spirit® supports a prevention-based model for elephant conservation in northern Tanzania: combining GPS tracking, community early warning, thermal drone operations, water access, and local veterinary capacity building.

GPS Elephant Collaring

Identifying high-risk elephants, carrying out veterinary immobilisation and health assessments, and fitting satellite GPS collars to provide real-time movement data.

Community Early Warning

Using GPS data to alert field teams when elephants approach farms or villages, allowing preventive action before conflict occurs.

Thermal Drone Operations

Detecting and safely guiding elephants at night using thermal drones and non-lethal methods, without disturbing or harming the animals.

Waterhole Support

Improving water access inside protected areas to reduce dry-season movements into farmland and lower the risk of conflict.

Local Veterinary Training

Strengthening Tanzanian veterinary capacity through hands-on training in sedation, monitoring, and safe wildlife recovery techniques.

Where We Work

Wild Spirit® works through Kazi ya Tembo in northern Tanzania, supporting elephant conservation across the transboundary Tsavo–Mkomazi ecosystem and in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

The Tsavo–Mkomazi landscape is one of East Africa’s most important elephant strongholds and a vital ecological bridge between populations in eastern and southern Africa. In both areas, tension between farming communities and elephants can be intense, especially during the dry season, when elephants move beyond protected areas in search of water and food.

Achievements and Way Forward

What we have achieved so far

In 2025, Wild Spirit® helped establish the first active elephant telemetry system in the Mkomazi ecosystem, shifting conservation from reaction to prevention. Together with Kazi ya Tembo, TAWIRI, TANAPA, and Conservation Through Tourism, the project introduced GPS elephant monitoring, thermal drone operations, community early warning, water infrastructure, and local veterinary capacity building.

What comes next

In 2026 and 2027, Wild Spirit®, together with Kazi ya Tembo, will expand its footprint to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area while continuing to strengthen the Mkomazi programme. Six additional elephants will be fitted with GPS collars, thermal drone operations and early warning systems will be expanded, new water infrastructure will be developed, and local veterinary capacity will continue to grow.
